To continue my TV-themed Top 5 posts, I decided to list my favorite cancelled shows that need some type of a “Closure Movie.” By this I mean that the series was cancelled too early, or had a decent run but ended on a kind of vague note, so fans would appreciate some type of film to give them closure.
For example, the show Firefly was awesome, even though it was cancelled after only 3/4 of the episodes aired. And then Joss Whedon and Co. made Serenity, a movie to complete the series, and it was wonderful closure with a great twist!
There are plenty of shows out there that were cancelled too soon, but not all of them, to me, need a closure movie. Party Down was a great show, but I’m not aching for closure. Sure, I’d like some more episodes, but I don’t feel the need to know what happened with those characters. So this list is comprised of the TV shows that I think need some type of closure in movie form to complete the series. Here they are, my Top 5 Cancelled TV Shows that Need a Closure Movie:
Okay, I’ll be honest. I’m not quite caught up with this show. My husband and I watched (and really enjoyed) the first two seasons. But we cancelled Showtime and we never got around to watching the third and final season. So I really have no idea if this show had any type of closure. But I imagine it didn’t, because Showtime cancelled the show when there were only a few episodes left in the season, and they probably had already filmed those episodes. But I just think that the series was so interesting, and I loved that all the characters were so complex. Even if there was closure in the last episode, I think that lots of fans would want to see what happens, say, 5 or 10 years later to this unique family.
I absolutely LOVE the show Gilmore Girls. I still rank it as one of my favorite shows, even though its last episode aired four and a half years ago. I own all of the seasons on DVD, and it’s one of the few shows that I will actually watch over and over again. But the reason I didn’t put it higher on this list was because it had a great run – 7 seasons! But I do want to know what happened after that last episode. What does Rory do after going on the campaign trail with Obama? Does she get a prestigious reporting job like she’s always wanted? And did she ever go back to one of her old boyfriends? (Please say she went back with Jess – I know he wasn’t the best for her but he was my favorite!) And did Luke and Lorelai really get together? And are they still together (fingers crossed)? I NEED TO KNOW these things.
Arrested Development was just one of those shows that was obviously ahead of its time. I mean, you have shows now with the same type of humor that flourish (like The Office), yet Arrested Development was cancelled after only three seasons. I’ve always wanted some type of follow-up with this show, and I was really excited when it was announced that there will soon be several new episodes that will lead into a full-length film. I think it’ll be great to see the Bluth family again, and I like the setup of the TV episodes (each episode is supposed to focus on one specific character, showing what he/she has done in the time since the last episode that aired in 2006).

Good list, and I especially agree with Flash Forward. I love shows with really intricate plots, but it’s sad that the networks don’t give them a chance to build an audience anymore. Of course The Class and Happy Town also would have been on my personal list.
