To continue my TV-themed Top 5 posts, I decided to list my favorite cancelled shows that need some type of a “Closure Movie.”  By this I mean that the series was cancelled too early, or had a decent run but ended on a kind of vague note, so fans would appreciate some type of film to give them closure.

For example, the show Firefly was awesome, even though it was cancelled after only 3/4 of the episodes aired.  And then Joss Whedon and Co. made Serenity, a movie to complete the series, and it was wonderful closure with a great twist!

There are plenty of shows out there that were cancelled too soon, but not all of them, to me, need a closure movie.  Party Down was a great show, but I’m not aching for closure.  Sure, I’d like some more episodes, but I don’t feel the need to know what happened with those characters.  So this list is comprised of the TV shows that I think need some type of closure in movie form to complete the series.  Here they are, my Top 5 Cancelled TV Shows that Need a Closure Movie:

5.  United States of Tara

Okay, I’ll be honest.  I’m not quite caught up with this show.  My husband and I watched (and really enjoyed) the first two seasons. But we cancelled Showtime and we never got around to watching the third and final season.  So I really have no idea if this show had any type of closure.  But I imagine it didn’t, because Showtime cancelled the show when there were only a few episodes left in the season, and they probably had already filmed those episodes.  But I just think that the series was so interesting, and I loved that all the characters were so complex.  Even if there was closure in the last episode, I think that lots of fans would want to see what happens, say, 5 or 10 years later to this unique family.

4.  Gilmore Girls

I absolutely LOVE the show Gilmore Girls.  I still rank it as one of my favorite shows, even though its last episode aired four and a half years ago.  I own all of the seasons on DVD, and it’s one of the few shows that I will actually watch over and over again.  But the reason I didn’t put it higher on this list was because it had a great run – 7 seasons!  But I do want to know what happened after that last episode.  What does Rory do after going on the campaign trail with Obama?  Does she get a prestigious reporting job like she’s always wanted?  And did she ever go back to one of her old boyfriends? (Please say she went back with Jess – I know he wasn’t the best for her but he was my favorite!)  And did Luke and Lorelai really get together?  And are they still together (fingers crossed)?  I NEED TO KNOW these things.

 3.  Arrested Development

Arrested Development was just one of those shows that was obviously ahead of its time.  I mean, you have shows now with the same type of humor that flourish (like The Office), yet Arrested Development was cancelled after only three seasons.  I’ve always wanted some type of follow-up with this show, and I was really excited when it was announced that there will soon be several new episodes that will lead into a full-length film.  I think it’ll be great to see the Bluth family again, and I like the setup of the TV episodes (each episode is supposed to focus on one specific character, showing what he/she has done in the time since the last episode that aired in 2006).

2.  FlashForward

The premise to the show was just so cool:  one day the whole world’s population blacks out for a couple of minutes.  While they’re blacked out, they see a vision of what they’ll be doing on a certain day at a certain time in the future.  Joseph Fiennes played FBI agent Mark Benford, who was part of a special task force to find out who and what caused the blackout.  I really think this show was incredibly smart, with a lot of great actors, and such a great plot!  I was really angry to see that it was cancelled after one season while other shows (ahem, V, with its horrible special effects) were renewed.  I’d really love to see a follow-up movie to this show and the novel it was based on, Flashforward by Robert J. Sawyer, is on my to-read list!

1.  Veronica Mars

So if you know me personally, you most likely know that I LOVE Veronica Mars.  And if you’ve been regularly reading my Top 5 posts, you’ll notice that I’ve mentioned the show before – quite a few times!  This show just had it all:  a great cast, witty writing, and great mysteries that unravel in every episode, as well as season-long mysteries.  This series ended at the same time as Gilmore Girls, and even though I love both shows, I was more upset about Veronica Mars being cancelled, because it had only run for three seasons!  There has been some talk about a VMars movie, and I really, really hope this happens someday.  I need to know more about Veronica, her dad, Logan, Wallace, Weevil, Duncan, Mac, and even Piz, even though I was always a Lo/Ve shipper.  And does Mr. Mars become sheriff of Neptune again?  Does Veronica become an FBI agent or something?  And, most importantly, do Logan and Veronica end up together (please!)?  Rob Thomas (no, not the guy from Matchbox Twenty) I’m looking at you.  Make. This. Movie. Happen.  Love, VMars fans.

One Response to “Top 5 Cancelled TV Shows that Need a Closure Movie”

  • Good list, and I especially agree with Flash Forward. I love shows with really intricate plots, but it’s sad that the networks don’t give them a chance to build an audience anymore. Of course The Class and Happy Town also would have been on my personal list.
