So I thought about doing a Top 5 Sport Movies and then I thought I should break it down by sport with Top Movie in each sport. In the end, I decided to just do a Top 5 of each sport. Naturally, I am doing Hockey first because it is my favorite sport.
If you are a fan of hockey, you already know there are a limited number of movies in this category, but I had some discussions on Facebook and have made a decision. Sorry, Johnny, this list is probably going to hit a nerve
.
So here is my list of Top 5 Hockey Movies to watch:
5. The Mighty Ducks - This movie is probably the reason I started playing hockey. Yes, the movie is cheesy, corny, and it’s Disney, but I still like this movie and it has some great moments. I mean how many movies can say that a professional sports team was formed because of the movie! Although the original is definitely the best, I could watch any of the 3 anytime.
4. Slap Shot - I know there are a lot of fans that think this movie should be number 1 or 2, but after watching Youngblood, I had to bump this movie down. I never really got into this movie like most other hockey fans, but I put it on my list because Paul Newman is a great actor. Sorry, Johnny. I know you love this movie, but it’s actually because of you that I bumped this movie down. Thanks for convincing me to watch Youngblood.
3. Youngblood - I just watched this a couple of nights ago, and I must say I was fairly impressed. Rob Lowe and Patrick Swayze were great. This movie portrayed what hockey was really like before NHL put their foot down and started protecting hockey players more. After watching Youngblood, I noticed that Mighty Ducks took moves from it, like the penalty shot at the end of the game. It was nice to see a great 80′s movie again and this made me want to play hockey again!
2. Mystery, Alaska - This movie came out in 1999 but I didn’t see it until 2003 which was when I was planning my trip to Alaska for 2004. I loved everything about this movie and almost ranked it number 1. I mean it has one of the best opening scenes of a movie, ever! It has some comedy, drama, and lots of hockey. When I went to Alaska, it was to a town even smaller than Mystery in this movie. I saw a lot of similarities though and when I visited Fairbanks then had 3 outdoor rinks that were open 24 hours and had a button you could hit if you needed light for a midnight game. If you haven’t seen this movie or been to Alaska, I definitely recommend doing both.
1. Miracle - Not many sport movies have made me cry, but this one gets me every time. It is also very sad that Herb Brooks never got to see this movie even though he helped out a lot with the filming. I think Kurt Russell did an amazing job portraying Herb and really nailed the accent too. When they casted for this movie, they casted hockey players first and then taught them how to act. Also, one of the actor’s dad was actually on the original USA hockey team that this movie was about. There was so much passion and dedication in this movie, and it really showed why the game between the Russians and USA was so important.
Tune in next time, I think I’ll do Top 5 Baseball movies. Any suggestions?
brought to you by Jeremy, who is watching Cars for what feels like the millionth time

Aren’t these the ONLY five movies about hockey?
)
Now that two outta of three of you have recommended Miracle it’s got to go in my queue.
Almost. There is The Rocket, Mighty Ducks 2 & 3, and Slap Shot 2 & 3. Not that many, but they are good. I think you will definitely enjoy Miracle when you finally see it.
